When I think Italy, I think the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I know there are so many other fantastic sights in Italy, but I’ve always wanted to take that cheesy picture where I’m single-handedly saving the town from the falling Tower. That’s why I was so excited when we pulled into Pisa Centrale.
We stayed at the Grand Hotel Bonanno, a short walk from the Tower. I have to admit, this hotel let me down. No air-conditioning and no WiFi. Although, when I was booking our hotel there didn’t seem to be too many outstanding options. Pisa is a funny town. Multiple people told me that Pisa is a one-day trip and they were very right. Pisa is covered with these beautiful flowering trees but also with a ton of graffiti. It’s very beautiful and absolutely worth seeing, but I was definitely shocked by the graffiti that seemed to cover every wall.
Since we were only staying for one night, I brushed off the underwhelming hotel and we took off in search of the Leaning Tower. I was totally impressed. By the time the third floor of the Tower had been built it began to sink. Only decades later was construction finished. I also didn’t know that you could climb the Tower! If you know me you’ll know that I love climbing tall buildings, and this was no exception. We waited in line and got our tickets for later that day, then we began the hunt for food.
After asking around we were pointed in the direction of a pizzeria called Quarto D’ora Italiano. The owner of another restaurant, Fabio, graciously sent us there as we were in search of the best pizza in Pisa. I had the funghi pizza (cheese and mushrooms) and it was then that I pretty much declared my undying love of Italian pizza.
This was obviously followed by gelato.
I wore white culottes I bought at Zara’s semi-annual sale this year. I was not a fan of culottes when they first came on the scene. What are they? Are they pants trying to be a skirt? Nothing, I mean nothing rivals the good ol’ midi skirt. So culottes offended me (not really). But after trying these bad boys on I was sold. They’re comfortable pants! Let me repeat that for emphasis. They’re comfortable pants! But I digress, I paired my culottes with a plain tank top, black flip flops, and my trusty boat hat.
My brother and I climbed to the top of the Leaning Tower later that day. It was actually very difficult to climb those eight stories because of the effect of gravity.
It was well worth it though, because the view was gorgeous!
Seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa has been on my bucket list for a while and I would absolutely recommend taking a day trip to Pisa to see it in all of it’s glory.
I keep talking about my bucket list and I’m curious, do you have a bucket list? If so, what’s on it?
