One of my favourite childhood memories is going blueberry picking with my family. We would fill buckets of blueberries in the scorching sun, but it was all worth it when we had enough delicious blueberries to last into the winter. I especially loved the homemade blueberry jam. So when my Mom came to visit I knew we had to go berry picking. What’s better than blueberries? Strawberries, of course!
We went early one morning to Shouldice Farms on Merivale Road in Nepean near Ottawa. I wore this adorable J. Crew gingham sundress paired with a Forever21 floppy hat, my Steve Madden sandals and a Dior necklace I bought during my first trip to Paris. I’ve got to be honest though, this dress was not an easy find. I actually had to call the Toronto J. Crew on Bloor St. and order it over the phone. It was totally worth it because I got it half off! So here’s a tip to all my shopaholic readers: can’t find it online? Call around! Chances are there’s a store that will ship it to you (you can thank me later).
I also carried this gorgeous Michael Kors bag. I’ve been looking for a “straw basket” kind of bag for a while. When Mom and I stumbled upon this gem at the mall I fell in love (my parents totally spoil me, thanks Mom!). This bag screams summer.
The strawberries at the farm were smaller than ones you’d buy at the grocery store but they tasted one thousand times better! They were so sweet and so fresh- the perfect summer treat.
I recently learned how to use my bread maker (fluffy, delicious, flavourful bread). Shockingly, there’s a jam setting! So after washing the strawberries we’d picked, Mom and I threw them in the bread maker with a few ingredients. In a couple of hours I had sweet, delicious jam. There is seriously nothing better. I cannot emphasize how delicious this jam is. Get back to nature and go pick some berries! You won’t regret it.
What’s your favourite summertime activity?
